How to Easily Disable Unwanted Programs Running In Windows Startup

The reason of your computer having a slow startup speed is most probably the number of applications unnecessarily starting up when you turn on your computer. Many applications needlessly add themselves to your startup process; consequently you experience startup speeds slower than you would prefer.

Typing “msconfig” in your Run window will open a window that has a tab titled Startup (you can access run by pressing Window Logo key + R). Under this tab you can see most of the programs that initiate with your computer’s startup.

However if you are looking for a better application that shows you all startups processes and gives you control over them, then you need to look into WhatInStartup.

Another handy freeware utility by NirSoft, WhatInStartup provides you with a comprehensive list of startup applications. Sized at less than 50 KB and requiring no installation, you can easily download the setup archive and run the executable within.

When you open the program, just the columns titles and their number will indicate how fully each startup application is investigated by WhatInStartup.

These columns can help determine whether a process is system or user related. If it is user related, you can safely disable it from running at startup. You can disable the process permanently so that even if it gets auto-enabled, WhatInStartup will disable it again.

WhatInStartup is compatible with almost all Windows versions and is a utility which all Windows users will appreciate.

How to Remove Startup Programs in Windows 7

After installing many softwares in your computer, you could notice that the startup of Windows 7 is taking too long. This is because when you install certain programs, they are set to automatically start running at the startup of Windows 7. As the number of programs set to start during startup increases, Windows 7 takes more to startup your computer.

Some programs like Antivirus softwares also start running with the startup of Windows. But it is a necessary one. There might be many other programs which you don’t want to start along with the Windows 7 startup. So you could remove those programs. Just do the following to remove those programs from Windows 7 startup.

1. Click on the start button.

2. Type msconfig in the search box and open it.

3. Select the Startup tab.

4. Uncheck the programs you don’t want to start during startup.

5. Click on OK and then Apply.

6. To finish off the procedure, restart your system and you are done.

Now the programs you selected will be removed and will not run at Windows 7 startup anymore unless you enable them again using msconfig.

Right Click the cmd icon and choose “Run as Administrator“.

Now in the command prompt windows type in the following command.

fsutil behavior set memoryusage 2

Now restart windows 7.

Using the following query will give you the current value.

fsutil behavior query memoryusage

Always make sure you have sufficient amount of ram 2GB or more before performing this tweak.

How to Save Priority of a Process in Windows Automatically

Some times we increase or decrease the priorities of process when required. Increasing the priority of a process will make it faster and vice-versa. Usually when you have assigned a particulate priority for a process in windows, it retains the priority you set only for the current windows session.When you restart or shutdown windows and when you again check the programs priority, it comes back to normal. You you need to start setting the priorities all again.

This process can be automated if you have the Prio – Process Priority Saver Application.

Using the Process Priority Saver is very easy.

Start Windows Task Manager [Ctrl + Shift + Esc].

Right-click desired process and select Set Priority.

Assign the priority you want for the process. You can see the Save Priority Option in the right click menu.

Now the priority for those applications or process will be automatically set and saved so that you need not again right click them again for setting the same priority again.

Apart from setting priorities of processes, the program enhances the windows task manager by adding two new tabs to it namely, TCP/IP and Services. The TCP/IP tab gives you all the details about the network connections.

Hovering over a service in the services tab will give you detailed information about the service so that you can easily decide whether the service is needed now or not. You will have options to stop or start the services on right clicking them.
